There are two main types of acoustical products
that are used in Gymnasiums;
Absorptive products and Sound Blocking Products.

Sound
Blockers are those, which typically involve mass. They
help keep sound and or vibration from transferring from
one area of the Gym to another. Sound blockers have a
comparative STC number that directly relates to how much
of a decibel reduction one can expect with a certain acoustical
product. Remember, anything water can pass through - sound
can pass through.
Absorbers
are usually soft/porous products that absorb reverberation
of sound. Sounds get trapped in these products and lose
intensity as they try to escape. The use of these products
in a gymnasium can greatly increase speech intelligibility,
help with perceived noise reduction and enhance music
listening quality by knocking down the reverb times that
are present in rooms with hard surfaces and large cubic
volumes. These absorptive products carry an NRC number
that helps determine how well a product absorbs sound
at certain frequencies.
