There are two main ways to treat room to
room sound transmission.
Sound Blockers and Sound Absorbers with blockers (or composite
materials).

Blocking products are those that contain or block noise
and or vibration. These products usually involve mass.
A good rule for sound blocking is anything water could
pass through - sound could pass through. Sound Blockers/Barriers
have a comparative STC number that tell an approximate
decibel reduction you can expect with a certain acoustical
product. Keep in mind, this sound blocking can be achieved
in a one step retrofit with the use of composite panels
that are decorative panels that can be applied directly
to an existing common wall, or in the case of new construction,
the use of barriers, isolators and some absorptive materials
that will enhance the total STC of your wall.
Absorptive
materials help by muffling sound and decreasing the intensity
of sound transfer when used with sound blockers. Absorptive
products have an NRC number that tells how well they absorb
reflected sound at a certain frequency. Composite materials
have both an NRC and STC number and do a great job of
absorbing and blocking sound and vibration in room-to-room
situations.
